Canon G16 - still a worthy purchase?

As a complete novice about to make a first camera purchase a friend suggested I try a Canon G15 which they own and love.

After a quick search I soon realised this was an older model and even it's successor the Canon G16 is pretty much unavailable.

By chance, I just walked into John Lewis and spotted a G16 for sale, last in stock. They will sell it to me for £240.

Is it better to get this or spend the same (or slightly more) on a new model with new technology etc?
