Teleconverters

While looking for lens above 300 mm for my D5100, stumbled onto some info on 2x teleconverters. Looks like a good, cheap way to reach out and touch subjects. Any body have any experience and advice about this converters?

New to forum and not sure I'm in the right area with thsi question.
